A Day to Celebrate Love
February 14 marks a day that all of us know. Valentine’s day. A day to celebrate love. Hearts, candies, chocolates and flowers, kids making and handing out cards with little declarations of be mine. Some are cute, some make us roll our eyes.
To some, Valentine's Day is eagerly awaited every year as men spoil their women with gifts and special dinners. Other’s hide away in their houses as it’s a constant reminder that they are alone. And some girls get together and celebrate friendship and dub it Galentine’s Day. And then there are those who see the day as just another day, and don’t celebrate it. But, what is Valentine’s Day? Is it a special holiday? Or is it a day where stores excitedly jack up prices to make money off the poor guys who feel the pressure to get their woman a gift? Or is it just another day?
Did you know?
Saint Valentine is a mystery, as the catholic church remembers 3 saints with this name, all of whom were martyred. How romantic. One of these saints went against a decree made by Emperor Clauduis the second, where he outlawed marriage because single men made better soldiers. He continued to perform marriages in secret, till he was discovered and killed. There was also a bishop named Saint Valentine of Terni who was also killed by the same Emperor. And other stories say Saint Valentine helped Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, until he too was killed. The last legend around Saint Valentine is about a man who was imprisoned and would write love letters, the first “Valentine” to a girl he fell in love with. He apparently signed it, “Love, your Valentine” before he was killed. Gives you a whole new view on the day.
Okay, but enough history. If you want to read more, I found that bit on history.com. Now, back to the present. What should we do with Valentine’s Day? Honestly, anything we want. For those of you who love to celebrate it, celebrate it. For those of you who want to treat it like another day, treat it like another day. Just remember this, if there is someone in your life who doesn’t feel the same way as you do, it’s okay. Respect each other’s point of view and don’t let it destroy your relationships. If you have friends you know spend the day alone, reach out and let them know you’re thinking about them. If you are someone who has been married a while and Valentine’s day doesn’t mean anything special to you both anymore, why not go and love on someone else, make their day special. And for those of you who are spending Valentine’s day alone for the first time in a long time because of loss, celebrate the love you had.
Valentine’s Day comes once a year, but it doesn’t mean you have to limit loving others to once a year. Let this year be the year where we love daily.
