Never Forget

November 11 marks a day where we take time to reflect and remember. We take time to honor those who fought for our freedom. Sometimes we forget and take certain things for granted. We are free to go to our places of worship. We are free to vote. We are free to make our own decisions. So, how can we spend Remembrance day?

Thank a Veteran.

Some of us know someone who has served, either currently, recently, or in the war. Thank them for their service. If you’re able, do something kind for them. Take them out for a meal, make them a homemade meal, help them with something around the house. Make it something from the heart. Don’t know a veteran? Thank someone who serves in another way. Thank a police officer, a firefighter, a paramedic, a doctor or a nurse. 

Wear a Poppy.

On November 11th, wear a poppy, the symbol of Remembrance day. And remember that those donations go to helping our vets. In fact, according to Veterans Affairs Canada, “the Poppy Campaign is one of the Royal Canadian Legion's most important programs. The money raised from donations provides direct assistance for Veterans in financial distress, as well as funding for medical equipment, medical research, home services, long term care facilities and many other purposes.” 

Attend a Ceremony.

Different cities will have different ceremonies to honor those who fought for us. Look online for a ceremony near you and attend it if you are able to. 

Share with the Next Generation.

Our kids need to remember as well. If there is someone in your family who served, explain the importance of their sacrifice to your children. Honor the moment of silence. Explain to your children why we have the moment of silence. 

These are just some ways to honor Remembrance day. Whatever you do, let’s be sure to never take for granted what hundreds of men and women did for us so that we could be free.
